History

~400 AD

Hnefatafl appears in Scandinavia. Viking warriors play it during long winter nights. The name means "fist table" — a board game played on a king's table.

793 AD

Vikings spread the game across Europe — from Iceland to Byzantium. Every longship carried a tafl board. It was the chess of the Viking Age.

~1000 AD

Chess arrives in Scandinavia via trade routes. Tafl gradually gives way — but survives in Iceland and Lapland for centuries.

1732

Carl Linnaeus documents Tablut — the last living tafl variant — among the Sami people. His notes become the key to reconstructing the rules.

2007

Copenhagen rules are established — the modern tournament standard. Asymmetric gameplay: the King must escape to a corner, attackers must surround him.

2026

TAFL brings the ancient game to your phone. AI opponent, online matches, daily puzzles. The Viking legacy continues.

"Older than chess. Played by kings and warriors. Forgotten for centuries. Now reborn."
